GOLD:

The Learning Teacher
PROJECT COORDINATOR - Magnus Persson,
BARN- OCH UNGDOMSFÖRVALTNINGEN, Sweden
www

Comenius Network

This unique Comenius network promotes a new generation of teachers who will be capable of understanding a new era through perceiving the processes influencing our children.

In 2003-2006, "The Learning Teacher" project helped to gradually transform the role of European teachers. From static omniscient teachers they become dynamic "life long learners". The movement gathered momentum and still continues very successfully in the form of an association today. Collective activities brought together highly skilled professionals and out of those came a continuous flow of valuable materials at the service of change and improvement.

The DAF Südost platform gives teachers access to new material and inspiration so they can develop creativity in their everyday teaching practices. The value of the initiative is demonstrated by the fact that the website is still alive and constantly evolving several years after the expiration of project funding and that it has succeeded in enlarging its circle of users and members dramatically, even beyond the original target countries.

BRONZE:

THE GOLDEN 5:
an educational intervention

PROJECT COORDINATOR - María José Lera,
Universidad de Sevilla, Spain
www

Comenius Multilateral Project

The Golden 5 is a successful example of how teachers can help increase motivation in the classroom, particularly for pupils at risk of social exclusion.

Compulsory schooling confronts teachers with the challenge of integrating those pupils who see no purpose in attending. The Golden 5 project offers real support. It helps teachers raise pupils' motivation by creating an inspirational atmosphere in the classroom. The project is based on teachers' own classroom practice and on the improvements they have brought to the learning environment for all pupils. It provides working tools, resources, a lively network and has provided training courses since 2005.

Erasmus Mobility

The University of Calabria fights unemployment with student placements.

The University of Calabria and the partners in the "Academic Student Placement in Europe" project have enthusiastically embraced work placements. The International Relations Unit at the University has worked hard to promote and assist work placements, against the background of youth unemployment in the region of Calabria, which is over fifty per cent. The project's database of European enterprises, organisations and other intermediaries will help many more young people obtain quality placements.

GRUNDTVIG

GOLD:

Inclusive teaching material for Adults: the Roma

PROJECT COORDINATOR - Tania Garcia Espinel,
DROMKOTAR MESTIPEN  BARCELONA, Spain
www

Our societies have generated social inequalities with regard to class, gender and ethnicity. The Roma project tries to eradicate inequality in the Roma society, in particular inequality to women.

Social inequalities persist in our societies, whether they are based on class, gender or ethnic background. Roma, and especially Roma women, are all too often denied access to education. The EducaRom project has recognised the value of education in overcoming inequality and exclusion. The project must be credited for the first ever tailor-made learning materials for Roma adults, designed and produced by Roma from organisations in three EU member states. By providing a space for exchange and dialogue it has in particular helped giving a stronger voice to women.

"eHospital: e-learning while in hospital"

PROJECT COORDINATOR -
Holger Bienzle,
die Berater  Unternehmensberatungs GmbH Wien, Austria
www

This project is addressing adult educators, e-learning facilitators as well as health managers who want to develop learning activities for hospital patients.

If we want to be serious about lifelong - and also lifewide learning we need to recognise that in the midst of society there is a group of people that have so far been denied the benefits of learning. "e-learning while in Hospital" wants to give this opportunity to patients who are forced to spend a long period at hospital because of severe or chronic illness. The project set out to support adult educators, e-learning facilitators and health managers who want to develop learning activities for hospital patients. Such activities can help cope with isolation, open a window to the outside world and ease reintegration into normal life: all in all one of the sweeter pills to swallow!

BRONZE:

EMMA - European (Network) for Motivational Mathematics for Adults

PROJECT COORDINATOR - Graciela Sbertoli,
VOX - Nasjonalt Senter for Læring I Arbeidslive, Oslo, Norway
www

There are many situations in our daily lives - and not just at work - where we need to rely on our mathematical skills. Numeracy is the word for this, and we find that too many adults in Europe still lack some of the very basics.

The EMMA project - or European Network for Motivational Mathematics for Adults - has made a valuable contribution to tackling this problem. Besides raising awareness of the issue, it has given researchers, experts and policy makers a platform to meet and discuss and to find the best strategies of improving adult numeracy in Europe. Think about it when you count your change in a shop next time!

E-vocal: e-learning for vocal ⁄ song
education

PROJECT COORDINATOR - Jens Waldig,
Waldig, Winterbacher Operasvoice OEG Geschäftsleitung, Austria
www

If you've ever wondered what ICT could do for music learning, e-Vocal is the definitive answer. This highly creative project provided multimedia learning aids that offer new solutions for students in vocal ⁄ song education.

With e-Vocal, music students can download a video file of an aria, showing a conductor, a piano accompanist and an imaginary vocalist. It simulates a live rehearsal, in which the student sings according to the interpretation and the timing of the conductor. It offers the opportunity to practice, at home or at school, interaction with the conductor and beat technique, and to work out arias both musically and phonetically.
